We Made It (Eventually)

July 31st, 2008 · 6 Comments

After nearly 24 hours of travelling, we made it to our temporary condo in Buenos Aires yesterday.  We left for our 4:30pm flight out of JFK at around noon on Tuesday making sure to give ourselves enough time to check the extra luggage and make sure we got through security with a carry-on full of [...]

Banking and Credit Card Fees

July 30th, 2008 · 4 Comments

We’re not planning on opening bank accounts in Argentina and we’re going to bring our U.S. issued credit cards with us, so there were a few things we really needed to consider:

Access to cash
ATM and credit card fees
Depositing checks in the U.S.

Access to Cash
While researching how to best get cash and pay bills when there, I found [...]

Moving Day

July 29th, 2008 · 3 Comments

The last few days have been pretty crazy. We left Vermont on Sunday after finalizing all the packing up and preparing the house for the ski season. The last couple of days in NYC have been filled with running around - returning my leased car, sending some final pieces of mail and FedEx, returning licence [...]

Big Mac: More Expensive in Argentina Than in the U.S.

July 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments

The Argentine Post has an interesting story discussing The Economist’s Big Mac Index which compares prices on McDonald’s Big Mac across the world as a way to measure purchasing power.
As they explain:
…The average cost of a Big Mac in Argentina now totals U.S. $3.64, compared with $3.57 in the U.S., according to the index.
In 2003 [...]

Internet Domain Names

July 26th, 2008 · No Comments

While I realize that this is not going to be a part of most people’s planning process, being the Internet guru, I started looking for BsAs domain names as soon as I decided to make the move. I figured, who knows what I’ll be doing or what’s going to interest me, but it might make [...]

Delilah (AKA - Bringing Pets to Buenos Aires)

July 25th, 2008 · 11 Comments

Yesterday, we took care of the most important thing we’re bringing with us - Delilah, Mersal’s 8 year old, 7.5 pound, mini-pinscher.  She has already dictated whether we were going to move or not (could we take her with us), where we lived (she has to have some outdoor space), an increased security deposit ($900 [...]

We Sold the Car!!!

July 21st, 2008 · 1 Comment

We sold Mersal’s car on Friday, and while it went for over a $1000 less that we posted it for and about $500 less than we wanted, it is yet another thing to check off the list.  This one didn’t go easy either - it seems like everything that could go wrong did!

We hit a [...]

UPDATE: Setting Up Telephone and Cell Phone Service

July 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Since I wrote about setting up phone and cell phone service, we’ve had a few updates that I wanted to share. First of all, Mersal was able to get T-Mobile to waive her early cancellation penalty. All it took was a friendly customer service rep (CSR), a fax specifying the details of our move (which turned [...]

Checking the Weather

July 16th, 2008 · 2 Comments

I started packing my clothing for the move today and was immediately struck by the thought, “Hmmm…I wonder what I should pack.” We’ll be back in the US in December, so I can always pick up another season of clothing then. In order to pack, I guess I probably should know what the weather is going [...]

Cancel Car Insurance?

July 15th, 2008 · 1 Comment

We’ve been trying to sell Mersal’s car on Craigslist and eBay (know anyone who needs a low mileage Toyota Solara?) and my car is a lease that’s being returned three months early, so of course we’ve also been planning on cancelling our car insurance. That should save us some money, right?

That is what I thought [...]
