Argentina Entrance Fee Increased

As of June 4, 2010, the United States has increased the price of the visa application fee from $131 to $140.

Since the Argentina entrance fee is a reciprocal fee to what the US charges Argentine citizens, it also increased by $9 to U$S 140 as of this date. This fee applies to any American citizens entering the country through Ezeiza airport. It is a one-time fee that is valid for 10 years.

No word yet on whether this new fee, which first went into effect on December 20, 2009, has affected tourism to the country or not.  Considering that a family of  four would pay an additional $560 for their vacation, I would have to imagine that it has caused some people to rethink their travel plans. I’ve also heard that some people are flying into Montevideo, Uruguay, and then taking a cheap connecting flight into the Aeroparque Jorge Newbery (the local airport in Buenos Aires), where the fee is not applied.

Thanks…that's what happens when you try and do things too quickly.

I think it is very important to mention in any posting of this type that the term "reciprocal fee" is something of a misnomer.

Argentinos are charged not for a visa, but for the privilege of applying for one. Many people are refused, and their money is gone forever.

Very true. I know several Argentines who applied and had their visas denied. They are out that money.

Ok…so if you enter Argetina via land or go to a different airport you aren't charged the fee? What about when you have to re-enter the country…are you charged it then? I have no problem paying the fee (though it reminds me of the saying "an eye for an eye and we all go blind") simply because I've heard the horror stories that my international friends go through to make it to the states (my one Ecuadorian friend was confused as a terrorist because he has a beard. absurd and ridiculous!). BUT, I'm on a college grad's budget and would like to see more of South America than just Argentina….so I'm hoping there is a good way to circumvent this.

I'm flying into EZE on Tuesday morning for the first time ever and just wanted to send thanks for posting this information. I'll admit, I like my shoe string travel and don't like this $140 fee business. It doesn't put a huge dent in my travel plans, but I feel I could have spent that money in country on something much better (food, drinks, souvenirs, etc.) Anyhow, I guess I'll just pay my fee and continue on my merry little way. The ten year thing is cool and makes me want to plan again for the second trip into Arg so that I can get some bang out of my bucks.

    Cheers,

    Adrienne
