Food and restaurants in Buenos Aires

NYC-style Chinese in BA!

dragon porteno chinese food NYC style Chinese in BA!After pretty much writing off Chinese food in Buenos Aires, I finally had a dish that was really good…

We ordered the Pollo Saltado Kon Pao (Picante) (Kung Pao chicken) from Dragón Porteño at Arribeños 2137 ($56 pesos), and it was the closest thing I’ve had to NYC-style Chinese food since I’ve been here. It was actually a bit spicy too! Their dumplings and scallion pancakes were also quite good. And, they deliver to us which is even better!

I still have to try the more upscale Shi Yuan too, but it’s nice to have some options for Chinese in BA.

The Best Yogurt in Buenos Aires

best yogurt buenos aires 272x300 The Best Yogurt in Buenos AiresI just discovered the best yogurt in Buenos Aires - Yogur Dahi.

After years of eating the crappy yogurt in plastic cups and bags, it’s nice to finally find a smooth, creamy yogurt that comes in a glass jar. I’m not sure why it took me so long to discover this… I guess I assumed that like so many things in Argentina, there weren’t many options so I’d better be happy with what I had. Of course, it costs about $7.50 pesos to the regular $6 pesos of the crappier yogurts, but this is one time that it’s definitely worth spending a bit more.

Just wanted to share my discovery…

Pecan Pie and Thanksgiving Dinner in Buenos Aires

Unfortunately this year, it seems that the number of Thanksgiving dinner options in Buenos Aires are somewhat limited. While there have been a number of open expat events over the past few years, this year’s options seem more limited to the few restaurants that are offering turkey dinners. Here’s a short list:

  • The American Club – Thanksgiving luncheon. You can RSVP by phone at 4373-8801/04 or email.
  • Kansas – they have their typical Thanksgiving dinner offerings.
  • Sugar Bar – they’re offering turkey dinners from 12pm – 9pm along with sports in dark bar setting that’s probably best for the younger crowd.

That seems to be all the options for this year.

Kelly Poindexter, an American pastry chef living in Buenos Aires, is selling pecan pies for Thanksgiving. You can get yours by contacting her on Facebook or at her website. This is a rare treat here, so you’d better act quickly!

Thanksgiving Turkey (and Inflation) Time

turkey pavo buenos aires 300x211 Thanksgiving Turkey (and Inflation) TimeTime to order your Thanksgiving turkey! That’s right, Thanksgiving comes early this year and is next week on November 22, 2012.

There’s not a lot of options for turkey in Buenos Aires, so we of course went back to our old standby, La Granja Converso Delicateses. Luckily, their turkeys are organic and free-range, and are actually some of the best turkey I’ve had anywhere. They come frozen though, so you should plan to get your delivery a few days in advance so it can defrost properly in the fridge.

Of course, what would another year be without the corresponding price increase. This year, turkey is $36/kilo up from last year’s $28/kilo. That’s a respectable 28.6% increase. And the cost of delivery has gone from $30 to $40 too.

And the government says that inflation here is only 9-10% a year…
