How much money in USD do you think it would cost for a young couple to live in Buenos Aires for 1 year? -Living in a 1 br apt ($800-$1000/month I'm assuming) and living a comfortable, not extravagant, lifestyle.

David - I'm still planning a blog post on visas and residency requirements. It is not actually easy to get permanent residency or a long-term visa unless you have a job here, pension (retirement), etc. Most people like us are on tourist visas that are good for 90 days. I have heard that they can be extended for another 90 days as well. However, near the end of either period, you just take a day trip to Uruguay on the ferry and come back to get another 90 day extension. The fee for overstaying your visa is AR $50, but most people do not recommend that in case you ever want to apply for permanent residency it may be seen as a "black mark."

Definitely let us know when you are here. We'd be happy to meet up. Hopefully we'll be a lot more familiar with our surroundings by then.

Greetings from Malaysia! Love your blog and have a question: what must a person do, or produce or prove in order to be elegible for residence in Argentina?

While not among the rich and famous, we are financially quite independant. I am Canadian and my wife is Malaysian.

I spent a month in B.Aires about 15 years ago and loved it. My wife and I spent another month about 1 1/2 years ago and were captivated. By the way, I am completely fluent in Spanish.

We will be in B.Aires for a month from next January 8 and perhaps we may meet for coffee and chat.

Meanwhile, any advice, suggestions or tips would be most gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks from David and Margaret

Crash - best of luck with the move and planning. Be sure to let us know if you need any help. I'm hoping that by then we'll know our way around a bit more. I'm planning to update this post a bit more with some real advice too, not just our story.

Love your notes on the pics. The floor on #9 looks like carpeting!

I can't wait to see pictures of your new apt! And I'm glad it's all worked out nicely.
