If you have a mac (not sure if the application works on a PC) look into call wave. I use it all the for text messaging. You seem pretty tech savvy, so I won't get into the details of how it works. But since you still keep your american (norte) line you shouldn't have any problems. A huge plus is that it is a widget and is always on your dash board.

"You will need to pick a new number from Google as there is not currently any way to transfer your existing number to them. This means changing your old number everywhere."

This might not be a problem anymore. I am an expat too, and there's a website called Avakit that really helped me when I relocated and changed job... otherwise it would have been a nightmare to sit and think of every person in the world who I need to send my new contacts to! Now I just need to add my google number... Highly recommend it!!!
