Last Thursday, the message of change reached Buenos Aires as I joined Expat Connection and Democrats Abroad at Sugar Bar in Palermo Soho for the Barack Obama concert. Oops, I meant the Barack Obama award show. Sorry, I mean the Barack Obama presidential nomination acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention.
About 250+ expats packed Sugar Bar for the AR $5 pints and well drinks and a chance to be a part of history. If the turnout was any indication, it definitely looks like expats are a strong voice for change. Everyone was extremely tuned into his speech, as could be seen by the girl in front of us who kept shushing everyone around her, apparently forgetting that she chose to view the speech in a bar rather than on her own couch or that she could re-live every word of the speech on YouTube later that night.
To be fair, it was an impressive speech – if a bit heavy on the hype. While I’m leaning towards Barack, I’m going to reserve final judgment until the presidential debates, when hopefully we can get some more substance than this night afforded us. The Daily Show has a great clip about the night:
Anyhow, here’s a quick video with some photos and quick clips that I shot.

Dave, I didn’t know you guys were even there. Erika and I were there too. Crazy. Despite the not-too-subtle Greenday song about Americans being idiots (presumably for liking Obama), I enjoyed your video very much. By the way, I think a bunch of people will be getting together this weekend (Saturday). I’ll send you info once we’ve figured out a plan. Hope you can come.

Jackson – You didn’t think my song was subtle?
I actually didn’t include it to make fun of people liking Obama. I like him too. I thought the lyrics “Don’t Want to be an American Idiot” where more telling for a lot of reasons – some of the surrounding the hype, some just being expats in a foreign country and people’s impression of Americans, some for the girl shushing everyone, etc. Wish I would have had a chance to meet you both, but definitely let us know about this weekend.

I really enjoyed this night and got totally energized by Obama’s speech. Later, I went back and watched almost all the DNC speeches on YouTube and I’ve never felt so passionate about politics before in my life. I feel that this election is crucial to the future of our country. I watched a lot of the RNC speeches too, and I’m totally going with Obama!
Being in that bar with that many other Americans made me feel very proud to be an American. I guess living abroad makes you appreciate your own country even more.
