About

We’re a young(ish) couple from New York City who decided to make a lifestyle change and move to Buenos Aires for a year or two.  We’re planning to move in together for the first time, learn Spanish, explore South America, and discover a new culture and lifestyle.

Mersal was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. Dave was born in Michigan and has been living in New York for the past fourteen years. We’ve both loved NYC, but realized that the city can really burn you out. So, we sold/donated most all of our belongings, took our savings, and decided to make a change.  This blog will detail our new experiences for friends, family and anyone else who may be interested.

    Hey,

Came across your blog and it’s been really helpful! I’m traveling to BA July 25-Aug 24, 2008 and had a lot of the same questions . When are you guys officially moving?

  • 2 DaVe // Jul 12, 2008 at 1:59 am

We’re moving July 29 and will be there the 30th. I’d be happy to help answer any questions I can, but a lot of this is completely new to us too.

Hi Dave and Mersal, We too are contemplating moving to BA. We have two children ages 9 and 11 and so won’t be able to wing it and move down without work. If you have information about tech sector/science/art (me) jobs either now or when you get there, would you mind passing it on? As much as we’d like to just pick up and go, we have to go the responsible route with the offspring :-). Best wishes to you and I hope you have a great experience! Julie

    Hi Guys,

Thanks highlighting my blog. Good luck to you!

Julie - We’ll definitely keep you updated. Luckily, we have gigs with US companies and can do all our work over the Internet. We will be looking at whatever opportunities present themselves though. We’ll be more than happy to pass on that info once we get more familiar with everything.

  • 6 DaVe // Jul 21, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Deby - we love your blog and posts. Definitely one of the ones we’ve been reading before the move. Hopefully ours will get more interesting once we get past the moving phase!

Thanks guys, That may be the route we end up taking too (working remotely for a US Co.). Happy trails!

Discovered your blog. Interesting happenings. My husband (32) and I (31) just moved from Chicago to Buenos Aires this summer. If you need some help with settling in down here. Email us. I think the day I sold my car was the day I realized we were leaving the states. Word of advice, if you like spicy foods, bring spices and bring electrical convert plugs.

  • 9 DaVe // Jul 25, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Thanks Khara! I’ll send you an email. I’m definitely bringing plugs, but we’ll have to see what we can do about spices…

Crazy, I had no idea how many people were moving to BsAs. It’s amazing. Anyway Dave, listen, my girlfriend told me about your imminent move and I’m really stoked for you guys. It’s going to be such an awesome experience. Anyway, once you’ve settled in and everything, drop us a line. We’ll get some dinner, drink some wine and break it all down. Que te viaje bien. Jackson - sounds good. Once we get out of this craziness of preparing to move, I’ll drop you an email.

Are you working while in Buenos Aires? If so what are you doing? When you were looking for apartments what kind of prices were you finding? Are prices on Craigslist what a place really goes for? They seem pretty high to me. I’ve always figured you could go to an inmobilaria and get close to the price for a local and pay up front because you couldn’t have a guarantia.

  • 17 DaVe // Aug 21, 2008 at 6:06 pm

David - we both do Internet work, so are still doing that while here. We were finding relatively high prices on Craigslist, but we had no guarantia and needed a furnished place, plus we wanted to be in Palermo Soho. We figured we would pay a bit more for 6 months while we found our way around and could move to something cheaper then. If you’re more familiar with the area you may be able to get a better deal.

  • 18 Donigan // Aug 28, 2008 at 2:15 pm

My wife and I are moving to Buenos Aires from Washington, DC, at the end of the year, for a 3-year stay. We have come across your site and have found it to be interesting reading. How do you like Palermo Soho? I believe that is where we will be living.

  • 19 DaVe // Aug 28, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Donigan - We’ve been loving the move and have no regrets. There’s things that take some getting used to, but we’re adjusting and learning every day. We love Palermo Soho, but we really need to see other parts of the city too. The nice thing about Palermo Soho is that you have everything you need right here. The bad thing is we have yet to explore other areas extensively. Let us know when you get down here and if you have any questions. We’ll be happy to answer what we can.

  • 20 Donigan // Aug 29, 2008 at 8:17 am

Thank you. I’ll leave a note here when we arrive and look forward to tapping into your experiences to ease the transition. It will be some time between mid-Dec and mid-Jan.

Thanks for all the info, moving to BA in a month. The techie stuff has been real help.

  • 23 DaVe // Sep 28, 2008 at 7:05 am

Ruth - Glad it was helpful! Hope your move goes well and maybe we’ll see you here.

  • 24 linda // Oct 8, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Love your blog, have tried several times to subscribe. Never received a confirmation. Can anyone help? i’m also a fellow nyorker lving in BA for a few years. living in palermo, so we are neighbors

  • 25 Karen // Oct 17, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I came across your website this past summer as my husband and I were planning our move to Argentina and found some very helpful info! We’re coming from San Francisco and arrived in BA on October 7th. Our first impressions are positive! We like our apartment and the surrounding neighborhood in Palermo, near the Jardin Zoologico. We do know we need to work on our Spanish, though!
I saw that your computer monitor was turned into a piece of art (sorry!). I would like to ask if you have found any place to buy electronics here that you would recommend? We are considering buying a wireless router (and are not very computer saavy) and don’t know where to start, besides perhaps Jumbo??
Would love to hear back. Wishing you good both times in BA!

  • 26 DaVe // Oct 17, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Karen - glad you found the site and thought it was helpful! We’ve had pretty much the same impressions as you.

Electronics are hard to come by here. I actually had a friend from the US bring me a router when he came down here. If you can wait 4 weeks, I can probably get you one when my brother comes down. If not, I would check out Jumbo or even one of the local computer stores. They could probably help install it too if you need it.

How dare you two leave Gotham ?? Come now IMMEDIATELY !!

  • 28 discoverba // Nov 1, 2008 at 6:40 am

Sorry, I don't think we're going back! Especially not in this financial crisis.

  • 29 Katie // Nov 5, 2008 at 9:46 am

Hi Dave and Mersal! I just stumbled upon your blog through a link on Bloggers in Argentina. You have some great posts, and it's nice to be in touch with people who are going through a similar situation. I’m going to place a link to your site on my blog that deals with my impending move to Necochea, Argentina to live with my Argentine boyfriend. If the spirit moves you, perhaps you can add a link to my blog as well. I look forward to reading future posts from you.

  • 30 Sharyn // Dec 2, 2008 at 12:03 pm

Hi guys. I really love your site. As I mentioned in an email, my husband and I (while originally NY’ers) have been living in Costa Rica for the past 2 years and are planning on making the move to BA in May/June. Really looking forward to reading about your experiences. I can’t believe how far away May is. . .but we have a lot to do until then. All the big stuff was done (packing up the apartment and selling things on craigslist when we moved to CR). .. so all that is really left is apartment, airfare and arrangements for the dog (which I am sure will be quite time consuming). Cannot wait to get there meet you all in person!!

    Hi,
I’ll be moving to B.A. in February 2009 to enroll in a language immersion school and came across your blog while researching the move. Thanks for posting all the great info. Do you have any postings about the medical system down there or about health insurance coverage? Do they have universal care or did you buy a policy in the U.S. for health care while abroad? Looking forward to reading more from you two.

  • 32 Adam // Dec 18, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Hey, I found your website a few weeks ago (while my girlfriend and I were planning our move to BA), and wanted to say thanks for the good tips. We are now living in Alto Palermo for the next 6 months– :) and are in the process of settling in. Would you guys ever want to go hang for dinner and grab a copa de vino?

    Cheers,

    Adam and Theresa

  • 33 DaVe // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:18 pm

james - we should be posting some medical info shortly. We have been a bit behind in doing that, but need to get it out of the way. We are looking into medical insurance through Expat Connection as well as through Swiss Medical directly. We’ll post a full report.

  • 34 DaVe // Dec 29, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Adam - would love to meet up for a drink and dinner. We’re traveling in the States, but will be back in early January. I’ll send you an email.
